World Environment Day 2025

Updated: Dec 20, 2025

The environment we live in is under constant threat from the changing dynamics we create daily. In the wake of the millennium, there were continuous efforts to make the environment we live in more livable, and efforts were being made to educate the masses. With the subject of environmental education introduced in schools, children can understand the efforts to bring the environment back to its normal balance.

World Environment day June 5th 2025
World Environment Day 2025

World Environment Day was established in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, where they discussed environmental issues were discussed, and the first celebration was held 2 years later. The main purpose of establishing the day was to encourage governments and individuals to save the environment. It also brings awareness to the new issues faced in the environment. This also helps in promoting sustainability and conservation practices.

Every year, a new theme is chosen in which the nations take part, in-depth discussions are conducted, and resolutions are passed. The nations then take the necessary steps to make sure the goals are being met until the following year's meetings. This way, there is some progress in terms of protecting the environment and also creating a good future for the generations ahead.

Theme for 2025

In 2025, the theme is to “end plastic pollution” (for World Environment Day 2025). The theme emphasizes the urgent need to tackle plastic waste from all parts of our ecosystem, which also permeates into our food chain, and is highly harmful in the long run. This is through the microplastics, which we use to produce most of our daily items, particularly cooking utensils.

In 2022, the issue was discussed in detail at the United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi to end plastic pollution. This was followed by an international agreement that would legally bind in 2024. This helps nations to meet their goals and helps to solve many more issues in the environment.

About the hosting nation

The meeting venue this year is in the Republic of Korea, Jeju province, where the nation is hosting the meeting for the second time after a gap of 28 years.  Over time, Korea has managed to improve the water and air quality, which has helped to solve the problems in the ecosystems. This has helped the business and the economy as a whole to progress in a better way by involving producers and all the business participants to take responsible action to reduce the use of plastics.

The meeting this year would likely see some progress announcements and new initiatives that nations would likely follow to minimize the use of plastics.
