Key highlights - Kerala Budget 2026
Compared to the previous fiscal year, the allocation of the budget is significantly higher- from 1.96 lakh crore to 2.45 lakh crore. This is an increase of close to 24-25 percent from the previous year, and is considered to be significant for the state. The state is now looking forward to some influx of funds from the centre, which will help the state to grow in a better way, though the matter still remains in the bench of the Supreme Court.
With the State’s revenue receipts having increased by only 0.2-03 percent post the pandemic, it remains to be seen what holds post this fiscal period. And the funding from the Centre, which is consistently dwindling, as per data, came down as low as 6.16 percent in 2024-25; the reasons are pretty evident. The State government, meanwhile, did manage to rake in funds through the state revenue schemes for its welfare programs, which saw many beneficiaries.
As per the recent Economic Survey, when we compare the national growth with the state growth, there is a wide difference in terms of the data. To illustrate, when India managed a growth of 6.5 percent, the state of Kerala managed a mere 6.18 percent. To argue this out, it is a mere difference in political ideology, and not in line with the overall growth of the nation.
With some positive news from the GCC countries investing in Kerala, and also some hints that talks in Davos proved fruitful for the state, it remains to be seen how much investment will translate to more jobs and establishments of businesses within the state.
Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers have been hiked by Rs 1,000 per month. This also brings the Anganwadi workers an increased pay of Rs500. Keeping the focus of the education of the state, there is an increased of pay of Rs. 1000 per month, which will be a benefit added to the primary teachers in the state.
An announcement of development projects worth 150 crores and 250 crores worth of programs for coastal, wildlife, and forest protection has been added to widen the sanctity and protection of the state's natural resources.
Many programs and initiatives have been announced for improved healthcare facilities for women has been adopted by the state. This can be seen as an inspirational move from the state of Maharashtra, focusing on menopausal healthcare programs and bone-related diseases, which are some of the key health issues focused on by the state of Kerala.
All the promises made in the budget revolves on improving the social security and general welfare of the people. These, if translated, could transform into one of the model states for the nation.
