Is India Ready for the New Age World Trade?

World trade today is in a paradox, with all the developed nations across the globe playing the game of tariffs and restrictions for the same. At the moment, it comes as a surprise that India appears to have the upper hand in handling future trade relations with nations across the globe.

The availability of new-age technology and the resources to meet people's needs today is evident. The right execution of the policies also benefits the people who are in the business of services export.

This decade has seen many challenges and positives. With the COVID pandemic adding to people's woes, the slowdown had begun way back in 2018, with many major companies pointing to a global slowdown. Interestingly, the kind of upswing post the pandemic had some positives.

Global trends have also shifted away from traditional operating models, keeping in mind today's demand trends. The evolution of technology has become one of the important factors driving this change. The evolution of digitization, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud services has become a highlight of change in the way global trade functions. The use of cleaner energy and carbon-free initiatives has become the norm of today,

Strategic trade partnerships have made India a lot more resilient. Considering the recent developments in world trade, the new-age order of tariffs by the US has signaled. Signing significant deals with nations across the globe will help the nation to keep its trade secure for a significant time frame in the future. The recent deals signed and the ones yet to be put into action will see a potential change in terms of economic growth in the country.

A trend promoted by the EU is “ carbon credit “. A system that ensures the reduction of carbon dioxide usage in the production process. This, in a way, helps in promoting the reduction of greenhouse gases emitted into the environment. India has also introduced a carbon credit trading system to function in the domestic market. India plans to achieve a 45% reduction in emissions from its growth by 2030. In the years inching towards 2030, we can anticipate more stringent measures from the government to achieve this target.

Current positioning of India

As we look at the current position of India, we have strategically seen the positioning of its industries with reasonably good growth prospects. Under the Production Linked Incentive scheme (PLI), many industries established are gaining a reasonably good pace in terms of growth. To name the following industries are visibly showing growth in the country:

·        Electronics

·        Mobile phones

·        Automobiles

·        Pharmaceuticals

·        Défense manufacturing

In terms of the services sector, there is a lot of potential for growth as India stands as the highest in terms of service exports. The industry got an additional boost with the AI revolution showing high exports in :

·        IT services

·        Business process outsourcing

·        Engineering services

·        Financial technology

·        Global capability centers (GCCs)

For 2025-26, the service sector saw a growth of $421.3 billion, which is a surplus of $213.89 billion from the previous fiscal (2024-25).  As per the reports of June 2026, service exports are likely to go up by 10-11%. From the estimates, it looks like a similar trend to last fiscal.

India is well-positioned, but not fully prepared. It has significant strengths in demographics, digital infrastructure, entrepreneurship, and services, and it is making progress in manufacturing. To fully capitalize on the evolving global trade landscape, continued improvements in infrastructure, workforce skills, ease of doing business, and integration into global supply chains will be important.

If these areas continue to improve, India has the potential to become one of the world's most influential trading and manufacturing economies over the next decade.
