India’s Sports Economy Just Crossed $2 Billion—And Cricket Is Still the Big Boss

India’s sports economy has reached a significant milestone, crossing the $2 billion mark. The latest figure, as reported by WPP Media’s report "Sporting Nation: Building a Legacy," is ₹18,864 crore ($2,134 million) for 2025. This represents a 13.4% increase compared to the previous year and marks nearly double the size of the industry since 2021, with an annual growth rate of 18.6%.

This growth is not just about numbers—it reflects how seriously India is approaching sports as a viable business sector.

Cricket continues to dominate the scene, as expected. It holds an impressive 89% market share, generating ₹16,704 crore, which is up nearly 18% from 2024.

Breaking it down further, cricket's influence is evident in each revenue stream:

- Sponsorships: 81%

- Endorsements: 87%

- Media Investments: 95%

This dominance can be attributed to the success of the IPL, India's victory in the ICC Champions Trophy, and the strong performance of the women's team at the ODI World Cup. Additionally, the Women’s Premier League is beginning to create new opportunities.

Media is the real driver of growth, accounting for 51% of the entire sports economy.

Digital advertising increased by 24% to ₹4,449 crore, while TV advertising grew by 16.4% to ₹5,117 crore. People are increasingly watching sports on their mobile devices, and brands are following this trend closely.

Sponsorship deals have grown by 7% to ₹7,943 crore, but the focus is shifting from volume to quality.

Brands are now making more strategic investments rather than just purchasing logo space. Athletes are also moving beyond traditional brand deals to equity partnerships, where they have a stake in the brands they represent.

Reaching the $2 billion mark shows a strong foundation, but long-term growth requires diversification. Greater investment in grassroots sports, improved infrastructure, and support for leagues beyond cricket will be crucial. Now, India needs to focus on creating a true multi-sport legacy.

Sports in India are no longer just about passion—they have become a major business. And this is only the beginning.

Interesting to see how much Cricket is raking up and bringing into the sports industry. The stats in the article seems to prove that we are heading someplace better. Hope to see other sports gather some inspiration and gather a lot more talent to represent the nation
